Fix Ctrl+C issue and manage threads while we're at it

Chris Snijder requested to merge 24-in-python2-ctrl-c-to-end-process-doesn-t-work into master

Manage threads completely, restart crashed threads and monitor KeyBoardInterrupt to start shutting down threads and self.
